Custom Foods

Icarus' Cook with Any Ingredients mod is what you are describing in the beginning. It has nothing to do with custom foods, although it does work well with them, nor does it change the base recipes. If what you are preparing requires an egg, bread, and an apple but you are out of apples, you could substitute something else for that one instance of dish prep. If you substitute another piece of fruit, there likely won't be much or any degradation in the quality of the finished dish, but such would be more likely if you used something in a different class of food (like meat). If you substitute all three ingredients with different classes, chances are the dish would come out very low quality. But who can resist baking cookies made with potatoes, garlic, and whipped cream instead of the usual ingredients to hand out to your enemies? ;)

The also popular Ingredients Overhaul mod is what changes all the base recipes. The two mods do work well together. Be sure not to accidentally get either of the two older Overhaul mods from BlackCat007 or Anak_Ponti, they are still available and were great on earlier patch levels, but this is the updated one after Cinderellimouse took it over. She also added Greek ingredients, harvestables, and recipes in her version by way of an optional add-on.

There's a whole bunch of other custom ingredient and recipe mods available that again work with the above. They do require CCLoader, which you already have. Icemunmun has some great ones on MTS; click All Downloads then be sure to restrict to TS3 because she also makes mods for TS4.

These are all mods and therefore already package files. They go in Mods\Packages, a subfolder for food mods would be good for better organization. Nothing needs to go in Overrides. None of them conflict with the Canning Station Overhaul. The only performance issue worth mentioning is that there might be a slight delay on clicking the fridge and then Prepare/Serve Meal while an expanded list of available recipes builds, but for most of us that's like a second or so. Perhaps around the same at the grocery store since more types of ingredients are in stock.

Ani's Drinks mod isn't really related to any of the above, that one changes the impact that "adult" beverages have on sims. I haven't played around with Sandy's custom edible foods in years, so any information I have on those is likely outdated now.

@mw1525 I have no desire to use the cook with any ingredients mod but I recently installed Icemunmun's Baker's Basket from MTS and CCLoader and my sims are enjoying all sorts of wonderful desserts! I mostly installed it so that my bookworm, natural cook SS would have more recipes to read (I can't help myself when I am in a bookstore and see new cookery books and she's an extension of me, after all ;) ) which add to her book count because recipes are fast to read. It's also nice to have new plants for my green thumb sims.

Me too! I can't resist a good cookbook.

When you download Sandy's cc, she's got a detailed description of the mods you need to use them... Example:

"Edible Food
- You'll find the food in Appliances/Misc
- It can be stored in inventory and then be sold with Ani's Shop from Inventory
- Snob Sims won't appreciate it, unless you edit the files, and use nonamena's script, at Mod the Sims!
- the custom food can't be eaten or grabbed when they're on their small cardboard tray.
- To have your Sim eating a pastry on a seat, you have to make your Sim grab or buy a pastry, then to seat, and there, click on the pastry in the inventory and choose "eat", otherwise they eat standing.
- some pastries are recolorable, so choose your flavor! ;)"

The biggest problem (not really a problem) I've had with these mods is that every time one my talented chefs or cooking enthusiasts gets even close to having learned 100% of the recipes, suddenly there are more of them to learn because I've just added another mod. These sims all hate me now. But actually this is realistic, there is no real benefit to the 100% except it looks nice on the skills tab and I don't know of anyone in the real world who knows how to cook everything (even if they think they do). The late great Julia Child may have been the exception that proves the rule. ;)

Do not confuse "overhaul" with "override." Nothing here needs to go into Overrides, it all goes in Mods\Packages or a sub-folder within that.

I think you have to add the food if it's on Sandy's site.

The developer is referring to it that way as a type of mod (as opposed to injection, pure scripting, core, and whatever the others are), it's a programming term. Nothing is really supposed to go into the Mods\Overrides folder unless the developer specifically says "this file should go into your Overrides folder" or words to that effect. It's a pretty rare thing. This is of course not record breaking by any means but I have well over 1,100 package based files, prior to merging in the case of CC, of which almost 300 are actually mods, mod related, or scripted objects, and have a grand total of 2 in Overrides as per such instructions.

The purpose of the Overrides folder is to force what is in there to load later in the startup process than other package files and thus have higher priority. This is used when a mod or scripted object relies upon the resources of another package file to be there but would otherwise conflict or malfunction if they loaded in the wrong order. It is not needed for those that "override" game file resources.

Example: A scripted object mod that functions as a stationary exercise bicycle and ties its usage to the Athletic skill might rely upon a particular custom bicycle and its animations (a different file) to work. The script cannot load if the reanimated bicycle object isn't there first, so the developer would likely instruct users to put the bicycle object file in Packages like any other but the script mod file in Overrides.

@mw1525 - I think she means that her additions to the mod are arranged in such a way so as to not conflict with the original purpose of the overhaul mod that she took over from its prior developers.

An "override mod" is either a synonym for a tuning mod or one is a subset of the other, was never entirely clear on that myself. It may depend on whom is being asked. Perhaps MTS should have called the not really directly related Mods\Overrides folder in the usual Framework something else like Mods\Priority so as to avoid such confusion, though it's a bit late in the game to go back and suggest that now. :)

But you know what, you can put all of your mods in Mods\Overrides if you want. I think they should still probably work as long as one of them doesn't require priority over the other like the two I have or the exercise bike in my example above. Doing so kind of dilutes the purpose of even having an Overrides folder though. Sill though, I wouldn't say that was the recommended placement for the vast majority of mods. The correct answer is the one that works best for the player.

@igazor - I hope I didn't ruffle-your-feathers with my category examples, so not my intention. I tend to speak my mind and call things as I see and understand them or how they appear to be. I realize not everyone responds well to this sort of 'directness' in communication. Or, even understands/recognize it as such (subjective to the person), which has at times caused my comments to be considered 'combative' or 'resistant' to the points or message which is being said; which isn't the case at all. I'm just a huge fan of 'Clarity', makes my life so much easier :).
