I'm not sure if this counts as decorating, but if you want houses that look real, instead of random garbage piles (like 90% of EA houses), use real house plans. There are lots of house plan sites on the interwebz and you just need the floor plan and a couple of elevations to start working from.
I find that converting 2 1/2 to 3 feet per "square" works well most of the time. It's better to err a little on the large side when converting.
