If I thought gift giving would make a difference to my sims I might do it. I don't bother with anything that doesn't add to their overall happiness. The only thing I do is feed children their favourite meal for their first meal as child even though it's just another perfect meal with no extra moodlets because it's cute to see them clapping. I have succumbed to wishes from sims to give gifts but only for the "fulfilled" moodlet when no other easily granted wish was available, although I mostly cancel them because I can never think of anything to buy that they don't already have.
