I thankfully never had to deal with the 1.69 patch myself. I read all about the trouble it was causing. My solution was Steam. I got the base game and everything else, 20 items total, (all but Katy Perry) on sale January 1 at $6.79 each. And recently, Steam had an even better sale, everything for $4.99 each. Digital, of course. Special Steam patch at 1.67. And I do NOT have to run the Steam client or the Sims launcher to play the game.
It did take awhile to re-download all my store content. My new Steam install wouldn't recognized the backed-up copies of my Origin store content. But once everything was in place, I've had no problems. The game runs great.
I've opened Origin a few times for other games, but since I no longer have my Origin version of Sims 3 installed, I don't have to worry about the unwanted patch.
