Annette thought about her wedding. How generic and dreadful it was. How awful she looked, four and a half months pregnant at the time. How she spent her wedding night watching Dirty Dancing instead of getting intimate with her new husband. If she could redo it, that would be nice, for the sake of having something to look back on fondly in the horrors of immortality.

Her skin is pink like foxglove flowers, instead of pink like pale human flesh. And considering Mel’s vague warning about “enemies,” she might be as toxic to me as a foxglove too. That’s what they tend to be.

He still dressed nicely when playing with the twins at the schoolyard. Once autumn settled in, they became close enough friends to do that on a frequent basis. It was playtime limited to the playground equipment, until Benji brought in some magazines one afternoon.
