I have been playing the sims 3 since it first came out and I have completely run out of creative ideas for my sims families and lives. I usually create a family, get bored with them after a few days, delete them, and make a new family. The longest time I've kept a family was when I made 1 sim adventurer and made him finish the "great adventurer" lifetime wish, and I have also tried multiple ideas in previous discussions. I have all the expansions except for Late Night, Show time, and University life. Thank you to anyone who suggests a fun idea. :)

you could do one o the many sims challenges or maybe try something different like a sim in a career you have never done or a gay sim maybe a runaway teen

Start with your single sim, as above and send them travelling if you want to but have them actually build their family in-game. Don't have too many children and have one of those children pegged for the legacy, basically to go on and do the same thing. Find and build a family. I rarely build families. I always start with a single sim. Personally I find this fun because otherwise, everything is pretty much done, you have so many sims that you can't really connect with any of them as a character and I personally find a lot of sims difficult to care for. Also, make sure freewill is on high, that way after your sim has had their family, you can concentrate on your legacy sim.Other tips, either randomise or mix traits, try all careers, give your sims a backstory, get a pet, give them hobbies and quirks and you should end up with sims that you actually care about for more than a few days. I imagine that if I just started with a fully made family and no back story, I'd have difficulty caring and would just abandon the family too after a few days. So my suggestion would be first and foremost, make yourself actually care about the game you're playing and that will make any scenario fun.

Can you try doing a wishacy? Make ONE sim and then let them choose who they want to be with, when they want kids, what field of interest they want.. I find it helps me get away from micromanaging into the same story over and over again. I randomise traits too for all offspring. Although if you're going to continue the wishacy apparently having the family-oriented trait is desirable.

I'd suggest getting at least university life expansion. It adds some fun aspects to it!I also personally like to try and make it as a hobo or homeless person and sleep on the streets on benches and all of that and not have a house at all and give my sim pretty much no money. It is an interesting way to live :D

I play rotational style like in my Sims 2 game. I use NRaas mods and a few others to make my game the way that I want. So I can play all my different families and when I get tired or bored of one family I move on to a new house to play. Maybe you could try that!

When you read his story, you can't help but feel sorry for him and try to fix his life. I changed his lifetime wish from deap see diver to owning a 5 star resort as I think it's more adequate to his story.

I am having a lot a fun playing with him and Pamira, more than I had with Jun Xu (the other pre made I played once), I fixed his life, he has a new job although he doesnt need one because he now owns the 3 resorts in town!!! Take that Alfonso Alto :p Pamira has a daughter so Teodor is now a proud granddad. It's a really nice family to play with and you can try and fix the hobart's place, that's how I started to get money, and I also sold his stupid house and bought a cheaper one.

- what i did; is create a pair of alien siblings, one was a female young adult, and other was an adult male, and i also made the brothers fiancee.

now i downloaded a moon world ( called moon base charlie/delta by rflong7 ), and moved them into a house i built.

what i did was make it so that the sister was a huge nerd, she wants to study the cosmos and find out what goes on in planet earth, she's very different in that sense and is outcasted because to her race; aliens despise humans for discovering their planet.
the brother is a huge jock, very flirty but he's still loyal to his love; he wants to raise many children with her and create a legacy.
he works in the military, defending their moon from invading species.

the fiancee is tech-savvy, she avidly invents things and works in the mechanic career ( i downloaded the mechanic career mod for her but it's up to you ), she too wants to have a family; but her first priority is her job.

i made up a fairly basic backstory for the entire household; explaining things on paper such as how the couple met, what led the sister to study humans, ecetera ecetera.

i started their household two weeks ago; and now the couple have two twin babies, i also sent the sister to uni so she could get a degree in science, but since you don't have uni you don't have to.

the couple married a day before the twins were born, and the sister got home from uni two days before.

i'm also having the sister build up a secret relationship with her earth lover . . . adding some drama there ( heh heh heh ~ )
