Game Crashes after updating Graphics Card info.

Sigh. I am literally on wits end here.

I recently bought my brand new gaming laptop yesterday (blew the whole bank account), and I was so excited to start back playing Sims(after two years of not playing) just for the game to say that they didn't recognize my Graphics Card.
I updated it, (I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with Max-Q Design) and followed the rules for the GraphicRules as well. Then, I downloaded my CC, Nrass Mods, fixed my fps to 60, and was ready to go just when my game WOULDN'T LAUNCH.
I am not tech savy, its 2:52 in the morning, I am on the verge of crying because none of this makes sense. I don't understand any of the crash data except:

00e5c21c => DasmX86Dll.dll not found.
Did I set my vram wrong? Did I mess up while setting up my graphics card information? I genuinely need help, and I don't want to call EA Support for the third time within a day, because I know they are tired of hearing from me .

EDIT: SO BOOM! I added back my old/original GraphicCards and GraphicRules information, and how about the game loaded. I think I did updated my information wrong, however I followed the instructions on getting the game to recognize my graphics card. Here what I put in:

vendor "NVIDIA" 0x10b4 0x12d2 0x10de
card 0x2191 "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with Max-Q Design"

As for my GraphicRules information:
seti textureMemory 1024
# setb textureMemorySizeOK false
endif

elseif (match("${cardName}", "*8800*") or match("${cardName}", "*9500*") or match("${cardName}", "*9600 GSO*") or match("${cardName}", "*9600 GT*") or match("${cardName}", "*9800 *") or match("${cardName}", "*GTX 2??*") or match("${cardName}", "*2?00M*") or match("${cardName}", "*3?00M*") or match("${cardName}", "*Quadro*FX 5??0*") or match("${cardName}", "*GT 1?0*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTS 150*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTS 250*") or match("${cardName}", "*GT 2??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTS 2??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTX 2??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GeForce G2??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GT 3??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTS 3??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTX 3??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GeForce 3??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GT 4??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTS 4??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTX 4??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GT 5??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTS 5??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTX 5??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GT 6??*") or match("${cardName}", "*GTX 6??*")), "*GTX 10??*"))
seti cardLevel $cardLevelUber

I'm guessing my setiTexture memory is wrong? I have 6gb vram, or that is what I read. All I know is, I don't want to burn my graphics card.

  • TS3.exe is for Patch 1.69/Origin controlled games. TS3w.exe (with the "w") is for Patch 1.67/Steam, Retail Discs without Origin, basically everyone else.

On Windows, TS3 is a 32-bit application which means it will reach for up to just under 4 GB of RAM whenever it needs to provided that the RAM is there and available for it to use. It can do no better than that and if it tries to reach for more, usually spikes into the Danger Zone of above around 3.5 or 3.6 GB, the game will lose its mind, crash, or Error 12 upon trying to save which is just as bad because no one wants to play a game that they cannot save. The goal becomes keeping an eye on RAM usage in Task Manager and making the game use less RAM if its usage is too high while maintaining satisfactory and fun gameplay. Sometimes, especially if all EPs are in play, this becomes easier said than done.

In addition to fps capping and rooting out problematic CC, we have a large helping of tips to help preserve game performance here in case you are not familiar with it. A lot of this is mod specific, we are NRaas after all, but not all of it is.

As you can see, it takes some effort to make the game stable even on modern systems but many of us feel it's really worth it because TS3 remains our favorite of the sims game series. This is just me of course, but I can't imagine enjoying a sims game for long without the open world being simulated all around the characters I am playing.

I definitely agree, especially because I spent 1,200 dollars on this laptop. I have way too many generational goals for this game lol!

So, how can I check my task manager? You and the website mentioned the fact that the game is 32-bit. However, my laptop is 64. I know there's a 64-bit version for Mac, but will there be one for Sims 3?

And I also saw that something about my fans. I tend to play the game in my bed, and the fans always come on while I'm simming (not with any other game).

Should I post my crash file? I'm going to take the links advice and see if my computer is up to date, but the computer was in excellent condition when I bought it from open buy.

Thank you, by the way. Sorry if this is bothering you
  • The 64-bit versions of Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. That is why we have a "regular" Program Files folder (for 64-bit) and a Program Files (x86) folder (for 32-bit), Windows knows which are which, puts our applications in the correct places, and handles them each the correct way when they are installed. Some day way, way in the future we expect that the 64-bit versions of Windows will no longer run 32-bit applications without some kind of emulator but I'm pretty sure the computers being designed and put into use today will have long since reached the ends of their life spans before that happens and by that time we might even be talking about 128-bit versions of things.

The macOS has been 64-bit only for a very long time and as of two current operating systems ago no longer runs 32-bit apps if one upgrades the OS or buys a new Mac with a newer one already installed. The new as of 2020 64-bit Mac version was a way to get users on Catalina and higher to be able to run the game at all. That version of the game is full of other issues though, and currently not worthy of feeling jealous of. Not sure EA is going to address the remaining issues on that one, but those of us who use Macs or both systems interchangeably are watching and hoping.

There have been no discussions from EA whatsoever about a 64-bit version of the game for Windows.

To see your Task Manager, right-click on your Task Bar and select Task Manager or use Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Of course, the game has to be in Windowed mode to be able to do that. If you get percentages of usage on the Processes tab, right click on the column and change the Resource Values for Memory to Values instead of Percentages -- you want to be able to see MB/GBs of usage, not just percentages.

To focus on a few of the non-mod suggestions of the page I linked to for a moment, the following are known to reduce RAM usage and increase stability for just about all players of the game and are worth trying if you have not already done so:

-- Play offline, meaning not logged in at the Launcher or in-game levels
-- Disallow the in-game TS3 store shopping experience from the Game Options
-- Disallow the hidden object startup game
-- Disallow scrapbook memories or use a mod to control them

On the fans, you want them to ramp up if the laptop is getting warm/hot. It's when computers do not dissipate heat properly that overheating and damage occur. As you mentioned usage in bed, I hope that you are keeping that laptop on a "hard" surface rather than on soft or fuzzy surfaces like bed linen. You might want to invest in a laptop cooling pad. But hopefully you can determine what it is that is causing the game to work so hard, apparently so early on in its sessions.

Sorry, I'm just now seeing this. I had to take a mental break from fixing the game because I got frustrated. I just wanted to say thank you so much! Hopefully I can figure this out as well
