All my Sims can easily take care of themselves.
Since I don't have box stalls, my Unicorn can fill up her own needs (box stalls require a LOT of hands on and it takes sooooo long to get them in and out)
My cat is independent and so he doesn't need a lot of attention.
My two Sims (thanks to the lifetime rewards) can keep themselves filled up pretty well. All my Sims (and pets) have Steel Bladder, Hardly Hungry, Dirt Defiant, and a whole slew of others.
So I only interfere when they each need to take care of something. Thus, none of my Sims suffer when I'm focusing on another. It makes my game so much more enjoyable!
