I have switched my active household while at University before and then switched back. I did it to make certain changes to my sim brothers' NPC-generated girlfriends and make them fall in love with their beaus. I then switched back and had no problem with the brothers finishing university, going back home and later inviting their girlfriends to their home world for proposals.
I wasn't sure at the time whether it would work, so I saved the game under another name, but now I know that it's not a problem. (I did use NRaas Master Controller to make the household switch, though, so maybe that was a factor. Still, you may be able to do it with the regular EA active household switch.)
I say back up your game or save as another name and then give it a shot.
EDIT: BTW, with NRaas mods, you have the option to change any sims' career and traits, etc. by just clicking on them, even if you don't actively control them. It sounds like you don't use that mod, though, so the household switch is probably your best bet.)
