I have done somewhat the reverse more than once. When one of my sims gets a tray spilled on them at the bistro and gets a complimentary baked angel food cake for being nice about it, wins hot dogs in the eating contest at summer festival, are given food to take home from work, etc., I don't wait until they go home. I immediately put it in their refrigerator so it won't spoil because they didn't go home right away or I forgot about it by the time they got home.
