Is there a drawback to switching active households frequently?

You can use MC and click on the sim and go to nraas-mc-basic-sell item to sell their inventory items. To sell items in the household inventory click on the sim nraas-mc-household-sell item and you can sell the stuff they have been accumulating. That way you don't have to rotate into each house hold. It doesn't take too long depending on how many town families you have. I will usually do a reset town after emptying them out just to clean things up even more.
