With or without mods?This sim is not a paparazzi, he's just some random sim that shows up every night and does this. Sounds like a locked out NPC roommate to me. Or rather, someone who thinks they are and has convinced the game of that as well. Or maybe you have an NPC door with a private room marker lurking within and it's some tired Service or Role Sim trying to go "home" to hibernate after their shift? I would probably do a Save As, unlock the door/invite him in, and see what he gets up to as a guest. :) If you have MasterController though, can you get some information about him through its Sim > Status reports such as does he belong to a household and what is his career or function in the game?

What lot is your house built on? Was it originally a community lot that had a food merchant? There may be some left over hidden marker from that lot.I would turn on buydebug to see if there are any hidden markers. It may require you to evict your household, save them and then save the house. Then bulldoze the lot and look at the empty lot with buydebug to look for hidden markers. If any remove them then place your saved house and your saved household back.

Okay, Plan B (or is it C by now). A food merchant is a Role Sim and Role Sims can be residents, they don't have to be homeless. So instead of getting rid of him entirely, what happens if you MC > Add Sim him to another lot so he either ends up with a household of his own or, if the lot was already occupied, he becomes Somebody Else's Problem? :) Although I have to say he sounds like a perfectly nice roommate to me whether or not that is his real status. I mean, he likes your sim enough to play basketball with them, seems to be fond of horses, appears to be well-groomed and polite...am not hearing about anything unsavory, fits of temper, making your sims' lives miserable or anything like that.

I invited him in, and he kept trying to play basketball with my sim, swam in the pool, and tried to ride my horses.Then left.
Under the status report says retired, food merchant.i looked around the lot in buydebug and didn’t see and markers.

He eventually left.But comes back every night.

When you go into edit town, is he part of the household in the icon?

I would turn on buydebug to see if there are any hidden markers. It may require you to evict your household, save them and then save the house. Then bulldoze the lot and look at the empty lot with buydebug to look for hidden markers. If any remove them then place your saved house and your saved household back.

If it's a roommate (like igazor suggested earlier) you wouldn't. They just move in without you being aware until they step into your house (sometimes that happens, it's a glitch). But they do show up in the icon, so if he's not - in edit town I mean, not in live mode - it's not a roommate. Roommates aren't controllable. When I played with roommates in my household, I only saw icons for my sim, her kids and her boyfriend. The other 4 people living there and the cat didn't have an icon in live mode (I couldn't control them), but starting up the game and in edit town, the picture with the whole household posing so to speak, they were there.

How do I check to see if roommates are enabled? I thought it was thru the mailbox but don’t see the option

The roommate service is engaged or disengaged through sims' phones under Real Estate and Travel Services, not mailboxes. If the lot type as viewed in Edit Town happens to be Residential-Apartment, there is no way to disengage the service without evicting everyone and changing the lot type as this is the Uni World Dormitory concept ported over to homeworlds.

Its a regular residential lot.The house I downloaded from DNA
And the lot was just an empty residential lot when I placed.
