I actually find really big families easy to play! My current family has 7 in the household (I don't use the nraas mod for my played household only for npc so I can make them have new kids that are closer to my kids age lmao) 5 kids and mom and dad, I had a dog as well but he passed away and I'm not ready for that again lol!
Normally it kind of depends on my storyline that I'm going for.
The heir to the legacy their oldest daughter I plan on only having one or two kids.
The oldest son already has a son and he'll have two more kids.
The second oldest son doesn't even want kids (but he's still gonna have one THEIR GENETICS ARE AMAZING)
The second oldest daughter wants four
And the youngest son wants five.
Having big families I absolutely love but it gets frustrating when I want to add in some grandbabies or spouses because there is no room for them, like I wanted to move in the oldest sons girlfriend and their son but I couldn't because I only have enough room for one sim ):
