Moving around in the Sims 3

I really struggle to move my sims around in the Sims 3. Are there any videos that teach how to use the mouse and keyboard? Are there any settings that can be tweaked? Is there some type of gaming controller that can be purchased that will be easier to use than the mouse and keyboard?

I have no trouble moving around in the Sims 4, but have not been able to get comfortable in the Sims 3. Is it harder, or am I missing something?

    I will be tweaking things for awhile, but it is quickly getting better and better. I have all the graphics on high except for the neighboring lots. I saw that on a video and I really like it.
