There's one problem I haven't solved yet, regarding reinstalling things. Like you said, I want to keep the number of sets/items to a minimum by not installing duplicates. But a good part of my purchase history is individual items (hundreds if not more). For furniture, I can sort of tell what set they belong to, although when it gets to the plethora of lights and small decor items it's a bit harder. Clothes, though, I have a hard time telling.
I'm not sure how to check, in a time-efficient manner, what sets certain individual items belong to. Looking them up individually in the Store is obviously one way, but I just don't have the time for it at the moment.
You should use Crin's S3S Browser. She has every store item (up to Nautical Living, I think). This includes compilations, sets and items. Plus all registration, free, Sim bundle, and special sets (like JCPenny, Toyota).
It's how I organized my folders. It tells me the cost of each item, what I have and don't have, how much I should pay to finish a set, and whether an item is part of a set or compilation. It also does it for sets. It has the name of each simpack so you can go looking for it in your folders, and if there is a link to the item, she's put that there to!
