Move the axe back into the backpack of the sim that originally found it... if possible... If this is not possible, put it in the backpack of the sim that originally started your current family... and reboot your game...
Just a suggestion, below:
Chances are the game cannot find the axe on the wall due to the extent of the content in the house.
I had to learn to part with a lot of collectables if I wanted to have an adventure sim and a large household of sims.
If you also have your buy/build personal inventory stocked with items you are saving for later... Toss all but the most important items out. Uh, this is going to be hard for me to even say... those backpacks, if they are stuffed, try reducing them too.
(Gosh, I so dislike cleaning backpacks and the store held family inventory)
