I have the same problem with letting them die. I usually address it by getting someone into gardening early on so as to get access to life fruit, and/or getting the Age Freeze Potion LTR. My current household is filling up with age-frozen young adults as their friends and neighbours grow old and die.
Yeah, it's a depressing feeling lol. And it's worse when one does a legacy challenge and can't cheat. This happened to me twice since this challenge is fun and sadly one cannot have the fruit in it =(
