Rooming houses

I'm wanting to replicate some of the things in my real-world neighbourhood, and given that I live in a sort of sketchy neighbourhood that includes rooming houses. Is there a way to build them? Can you, for instance, create the kind of lots introduced in UL for university residences in your main town?

I think you can build a house with rooms for different sims and get roommates to move in. The roommates are sims who live in your house but you don't control them. I don't use tggem myself because they use up all of tgecspare places in the household so you always have 8 sims living in the house. I wanted to be able to specify how many roommates would live with me. So I dont use that system now. I do have houses full of unrelated sims as housemates and play them occasionally.

You can place a university in a home world, and so long as it has the proper rabbithole rugs, it will function that same as in the university world. So it seems that if you designate lot as a dorm, fraternity, or sorority, in your home world, it should function the same as at university too.

Just for clarification, are mods required to do that? I had thought they were.

I suppose I should get over my aversion to mods. Unlike, say, Minecraft, TS3 isn't being updated regularly so I assume there's less risk of being locked out of a save because the mods don't work anymore.

@Nitroglycol I resisted mods until after Simsv4 was released. Now I have lots of mods and custom content too. I use a lot of the NRAAS mods. The only one of those I've had a problem with and it confused me at first, is the Cupcake mod. The cupcake mod restocks your bakery each night. If you have it in your mods folder but don't have the bakery set installed you can't launch the game. The solution is easy, pull the mod out or install the bakery set.
  • Yeah, I've used roommates before. I'm just wondering if the residence lot type can be used in the primary town, though; it seems like the kind of lot type that most closely matches a rooming house. Not necessary for my primary household either.
