Save question

Hey. I was wondering if it's possible to save your Sims games, custom content etc. via e-mail? If so, which method is best?
  • Email servers have strict limits on the size of attachments for both outgoing and incoming, as well as total size limits on mailboxes. They all differ, but I've never seen one that allows for more than 50 MB of attachments going in either direction, most are much more limited than that.

Saved games alone can be hundreds of MBs or even a GB or two, depending on how many connected worlds are inside and how long they have been played. CC will vary depending on how many dozens, thousands, or tens of thousands of items we are talking about.

A better strategy might be to upload all of this stuff to a third party file host like DropBox, MediaFire, GoogleDrive, OneDrive, etc. and download or share the resulting links as needed.

Good advice from igazor... Eventually, I recommend grabbing a flash drive on sale whenever you can. You can get pretty decent GB size for cheap on sale. I like Newegg and Amazon or even Best buy if you find an 'Open-Box' deal. Well... unless you're not in the US. :p
  • You can send copies of these things up to cloud based storage as part of your backup plan, certainly. But I wouldn't want any kind of automatic process trying to take care of that while the game is running as it will tend to interfere with gameplay and use too many resources.

Can this also save all of my Sims, CCs, the worlds I've downloaded etc.?

Yes... if it is installed in your current game.

If you back up the "Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\" folder then this will include everything that is currently installed in the game. Save games, Sims, Installed Worlds, CC, and Store Content is all in there.
Also any downloaded store and custom content that are in .Sims3Pack format that are not installed but appear in the Download section of the launcher are in there.
    Edit: And Library items also.

But as @igazor mentioned, this came be very large, mine is currently 2.72GB and that is by no means the largest I have heard of. I don't even have any save games included in that as I am just returning to the game after a break. But I have a lot of additional stuff stored in other locations that I have downloaded and experiment with but don't have installed in the game currently.
  • I just checked and my user game folder weighs in at almost 36 GB. Of that, 28 GB is saves though so in my case if I wanted to push a backup to the cloud I would probably be more selective about it. Others might not need to be. Residential upload speeds aren't all that spiffy where I'm at, so it would take quite a long time to push the entire thing up to the cloud plus I'd probably have to pay to upgrade my cloud service to store that much data. But then again I don't really need 12 different saves of the same ongoing game stored up there either, others would have fewer/smaller saves and maybe more content to consider.
