Hey,with the towel you have several interactions.First you click a spot on the ground and choose relax here.Then you have options to put up an umbrella,nap,play music and lay on back.
As far as reading a book yes you can and can also use mutitab.The reading a book has nothing to do with the towel interaction is a multitask that can be done on the towel.
Simply click on your inventory choose the book you own you want to read and they will roll over and start reading it on the towel.
Shot this for video real quick for you, sorry is night time in my game but still.Just relaxed on towel chose my book and that's it.

Really easy great way to read and learn a skill while relaxing getting a tan or in my case a moon tan :D
