Should I go against my particular playing style when creating a very in depth storyline?

Bit of a bizarre question, I guess. I'm looking for some general advice and output for how I should approach a certain story.

Apologizes in advance for any strange phrasing and/or word choice; English is not my first language. Writing paragraphs or thoughts down are particularly difficult as I seem to confuse native speakers with uncommon figurative language. :disappointed:

A few days ago, I had some free time after my final exams and jotted down some ideas for a new household in a current save. It eventually turned into a full fledged story line, and have 6-8 pages of potential sims and ideas.

I have a very different play style than the majority of simmers on here, it seems. I tend to speed up the "tedious" things like the process of naturally progressing in careers and skills if being advanced in something particular is important to a story. I'm very impatient person, I will admit. One of the major sims starts off is presumed to start off at the top of his career, as that's where the story begins, but I'm conflicted on how it should begin.. should it be gradual or sudden? I haven't played gradually in years, and while I think it would be a fantastic change in pace, I don't know how to do so.

To keep things short and comprehensible, there's two main sims involved---both males.

(I guess you could label it as Romeo and Julio, but it's very different concept at the same time.)

Sim 1 - Rebellious delinquent who had a particularly rough upbringing. Top of the criminal career do to his mother's connections, but would rather spend his days drawing on easels. Morally conflicted, and escapes the justice system that is attempting to silence his recent political protests with his magnificent art that gratifies the city's inhabitants. When protesting at City Hall about a recent law, he flees when the police start harassing innocent protesters.
When seeking asylum, he meets another political criminal.

Sim 2 - Grew up with connections to the music industry, as his parents were both successful musicians themselves. A well known musical "prodigy" whose upset with his country's polices on gay rights. Silent about his sexuality, and pretends to be happy in his arranged marriage. He assembles a large scale peaceful protest. He is arrested without a fair trial and threatened with life in prison. He flees with a very large bounty over his head, and ends up meeting sim 1.

~ I refuse to spoil any more! ~

There are a lot more sims involved in this, sure, but these are the two major ones.
How do you personally think I should go about recreating this story in my game? Should I make these sims entirely from scratch in CAS or have them go through the stages of life to really flesh out their character development? I'm afraid if I do create a background, I will get bored and resort back to other save files.

Thoughts?
  • Congratulations on getting through your finals. Here's hoping all your hard work gets you the results you want :)

Your English is very good and you have laid out your scenario very clearly. An interesting idea and I love that your main characters have the arts as a common bond.

Two thoughts. There was once a great youtuber called Quxxn who recommended trying something completely different once in while. It helped to keep the game fresh for you.

Secondly you have just finished your finals and will probably benefit from some serious relaxation. I slept for almost two weeks after my finals. However then home computers were pretty rare and it would be another 17 years before the Sims was even thought of.

So I recommend developing your sims from scratch and gradually building their skill sets and careers. I don't really mind this as I find it quite absorbing and relaxing. I hope you might too. Plus there is nothing more satisfying than seeing your sim gain a skill point or move up the career ladder.

Then you have the perfect base for your story and you can really enjoy yourself telling the story over whatever period of time you want. Finally there is nothing to stop you from returning to other saves. That again is varying things. I find moving between CAW projects and some of my saves works in the same way for me.
  • When adding sims to an existing game with intricate backstories like this couple and presumably other sims, the decision of whether to play out the backstory or not first doesn't have to be all or nothing. I usually play out just enough of it to establish a baseline and a bunch of sim relationships (bad ones from their former lives included, in this case) to have a solid foundation to work from. In other words, I would probably begin this storyline just before these two sims ever met but not so long before that I get lost in the pre-story details and never get them together to where they were meant to be.

I suppose the same would apply for new games if I ever actually started any new games meant to be kept going long-term rather than adding characters to my existing one, but the idea is the same either way.

I don't have a hard and fast rule about skills and career levels when developing new characters. I mean, I love working my sims through the various skills and career ladders, I'm very patient and to me that kind of slow progression is a crucial part of gameplay. But you can't have a presumably YA or Adult sim who is essentially starting their life over not have had some skills and experiences behind them. These sims at least need to have Level 5 or 6 on Painting and some musical instruments respectively to start out or the backstory doesn't make as much sense. Probably some Charisma, Logic, and Athletic but still mid-range and not all the way over the top, for the former Criminal history.

I think Romeo and Julio (yes, I am sure that's not their real names) should both be in the Political career, the very beginning stages, or perhaps one giving Law Enforcement a try in their new world, and thus be on "opposite sides" of something or other until they actually meet and get to know each other. That's where the fun part of the storyline would begin for me. :)
  • You’re not alone.I often advance them in their careers for stories all the time example my current story is about a country singer. So of course he joined the singer career I cheated maxed his guitar level out, leveled him up in his career and gave him 3 star celeb points. It would be interesting to read your stories sometime
