Sims 3 on Windows 7 in 2020

I currently play Sims 3 on Windows 7, but recently saw that Microsoft will no longer be supporting Windows 7 in early 2020. Do I need to upgrade to another operating system or is it ok to keep it on Windows 7? If I do need to upgrade, which version of Windows is recommended? Thank you very much!!
  • Win 7 officially goes out of support in mid-January. That doesn't mean it stops working or that applications like TS3 running on it instantly stop working just then. But potentially it does become a security risk for computers that face the Internet in any way as there will no longer be any Windows Updates to it (except possibly for emergency ones, XP got a couple of those post-support). Eventually applications and web services will stop supporting it, web browsers and plug-ins will no longer account for Win 7 users, etc. so there is an unknown timing element. In theory Origin could stop supporting Win 7 and some future update could break it unintentionally without anyone at EA realizing it until users complain (and then they won't likely fix it). We would expect an announcement from EA as to when the dropped support and testing might happen, though. I doubt they test and support Vista any longer, for example, but I'm pretty sure at least some time passed before that happened.

If you have a disc install and are not relying on Origin or online in-game services, this doesn't really matter quite as much.

Best practice would be to plan to upgrade to Win 10 at some point, if one's hardware can tolerate it and with the understanding that sometimes upgrades do not function as well as they should and the user may need to wipe their hard drive (thus losing everything that is on it if it's not backed up somehow) and install Win 10 fresh from scratch.
  • No. The end of support for Windows Seven means that Microsoft won't send updates to your operating system. Their live customer support are also ordered to refuse to support it. That does not affect any software running on the Windows Seven OS, be it now or in the future.

Despite popular wisdom to the contrary, you can use a deprecated OS indefinitely if, and ONLY if, you have a functioning, enabled Firewall AND an antivirus program that is currently supported. Make sure you install every update Microsoft has released from the OS. If you don't have a proprietary Firewall from software, make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on and set to block everything except programs on your Exceptions List. Furthermore, if you do not have a full antivirus program that constantly updates itself, get one. (I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, but AVG Free works just as well. Make sure Windows Defender is turned on, too.)

One last note: with an unsupported OS, you are on your own. Exercise extreme caution and perform common-sense procedures to avoid viruses. If you have the latest antivirus software, a Firewall, and a little brainpower, you will be safe in the future.

I do not recommend Windows Ten because it removed support for SECDRV DRM. SECDRV was used in tens of thousands of games that came on a physical disc. Essentially, every game on a CD made before Windows Seven is unplayable with it. If you don't have any games on a physical disc, you should be okay.
