Yes, I can imagine that applying to teach English with an accent would throw people off! My mum's boyfriend has told me that I have a beautiful accent when I speak French, which is good XD I think that my brother's teacher, who teaches him both English and French, is Spanish, and his accent speaking both languages is pretty epic.
And ah, university....I'd like to teach kindergarten, which must be VERY different XD
