I'm not sure how teaching certs work in Canada or what the teacher numbers are in various areas, but look into becoming certified or taking classes for special education as well. My dad is a teacher and though his degree is history and that was his original intention, he ended up becoming a special ed teacher and has been doing it for years. Spec. Ed. teachers are often in demand in most grade levels but it takes a special person to be able to do it well in my experience. Anyway, any "high needs" certs/classes you can add to your resume would probably go a long way toward getting a job.
