I'm not sure when first it started, but it was when I still was able to play the Sims enjoyably, so before the patch for Seasons.
(After that patch things went downhill until the game wouldn't even start. Luckily, with patch 1.63 the Sims is playable again at long last. At least for me...)
Thought about the Launcher as the culprit because it didn't matter what EP actually was supposed to launch. Installing or removing the last (or previous last etc.) EP didn't make a difference.
I imagine that as the Launcher crashes, poking around in the memory bank for/by the reporter program might just tip the memory load over the critical boundary for the launching game -- causing it to crash in its turn. So, yes, prohibiting the crash reporter to have a look around might just make the difference between successful continuing to load and coming down with a crash.
