But I jumped right in with a legacy challenge and I think if I had a fully functioning house to begin with it would not have been so difficult. I do like how there are always people around to meet/chat etc. And it seems like my "friends" visit a lot when in Sims 3 they did not.

I like that you spend so much time taking care of your sims, but that's just the control freak in me. :D But if it annoys you leave the high will up and they look after themselves well, taking the most urgent need first.
I agree that repairing things around the house all the time gets frustrating, but it is also a way to get the parts you will need for upgrading everything for free. If you search through the junk pile it makes before throwing it out you get more parts. NEW FEATURE!! I love the fact you can do multiple upgrades on the same item. Hovering your mouse over the upgrade type tells you which parts and how many you will need plus most even say what the upgrade does. Like in Sims 3 you unlock more upgrades as you increase skill levels. The first few are of course are to make the item self cleaning and unbreakable, though each item words things a little differently.
I've bought my sim the first 2 handy books and have her read the a little each day while listening to music. You need to keep reading the same book for 3 level e.g book 1 levels 1-3 otherwise your sim will tell you they don't understand what they're reading. (If she's in a focused mood the skill builds a little quicker) I like that you can just go to the bookcase and buy a book. You can get books for most if not all the skills. (under the hammer icon) You can buy 2 extra books of recipes for cooking (you start off with basic recipes, unlocking more as skills increase) and 1 of mixology recipes (I havn't tried this skill yet but I assume it works along the same lines as cooking.)
Yes friends do pop in quite often unannounced, sometimes they will call first. Or they'll just call for a chat. I really like how you can hover over a sim and get the relationship bubble. It makes it easier to cultivate friendships with people you already know, especially with all the people running round everywhere. You can also make an acquaintance with out meaning to, as sims will jump into a conversation your sim is having with someone else or simply just walk up and talk to your sim. If your out and about and want to take someone home with you, just use the phone and select "travel with" and pick who you want to come with you.
The phone is one of the key items your sim will be using every day. The other will be the computer. Between the two you will find most things you want to do.
Other things I've noticed a few people have trouble with:
TO SEND SIM HOME QUICKLY: click on house in their icon
TO CHANGE INTERACTIONS AT WORK: click on the people in their icon. NB you can't check on their needs while at work
