You are allowed to use the mid-life crisis on any sims, spouses or heirs/spares. Keep in mind that if you DO use it, you must roll randomly for your new traits. (unless you are playing with the family trait optional rule, in which case assign one of the five traits to be the family trait and randomly generate the other 4).
You must keep the new set of traits you roll, even if they are worse. If you want to roll again, you must re-buy the mid-life crisis lifetime reward.
On a similar note, you are allowed to purchase the "Change Lifetime Wish" perk to switch any sim's LTW from one to another.
While buying and re-buying these two perks might burn through your lifetime perk points, thankfully they don't reduce your sim's lifetime earned total, which is the only number that counts for the "Earn 100K aspiration points" Legacy Point.
