I did a self portrait with my second generation. I found that if you just use the still life option, you can move the camera around to where the person is standing and capture their photo. Of course they won't be looking at the camera, but its still a portrait.
You can actually still move the camera around (turn it, etc.) with the mouse and using the right mouse-button (on PCs anyhow), so you can even get them facing the camera more when you do it. Although there'll still be an easel in the way.
