Be patient through at least your first generation. By the second you should have enough disposable cash to fill the lot with trees, shrubs, and a lovely pond your sims can gave upon out there windows.
It took me a while to get used to because I normally live in beautiful downloaded homes, but my place is finally coming around.
What I miss now is all the downloaded clutter that I had in Sims 2.
