Since Dakota’s death Michael wanted to go home, all he could think about was his family, he had only one brother left and he was burning inside with pains he never experienced before. He called his Ma, to hear her voice
“Ma I want to come home…..” Michael said fighting back the hard lump growing in the back of his throat.

“Michael Fox you’re not a quitter… you need to complete your education”
Cheyenne had got news about Dakota’s death but she also knew that no matter what tragedy in life occurred, you do what it takes to continue to fight within yourself, she was brought up in a tough world and a tough life time. She had done all she could to teach all her boys the same to embrace their strength, yes Michael was the one she saw the strongest strength in, yet the most innocence, which she felt she needed to protect more than her other two sons. She knew he would do it for her if anything else.

“I know ma… but… it’s….. lonely here… I feel…” he whispered

“Mikie… my son… please,… for your ma, ….do this”, She said softly
“A year is not a long time and you will come home wiser, smarter and mentally stronger… education is always good…. We are ok here:, she confirmed.
“You know your ma is tough as nails”, she jokingly added
“After all I have to live with you males in one house, don’t you think I can’t still whoop your butts into line If I have to?” she said in a jokingly yet stern manner, knowing Michael would understand her.

Michael knew his ma was right, she was his rock, but he felt really lonely and was missing home…
“Yes Ma….. I am very sure you can….” he chuckled at her quirky manner of getting a point across.

“Mikie….”, She whispered
“You know that secret vault of yours… ?” she gently reminded him with a whisper, as she always did with him.

“Yes ma”, he said with a smile
Michael knew she was the only person who knew of his private vault, where he would store all his questions, emotions, memories, anything that was bothering him. It was something she taught him to do as a child when he needed help to get through tough times.

“Use it! Cheyenne sharply insisted
“Don’t just use it my son…, build many walls around this vault,…… protect it,…… keep it all safe… open it ONLY when you must!” She continued in a serious tone
“but remember… it’s only a year and you will be coming home.
“Make your ma proud, my darling son… make me proud” she said chocking back on her own pain for him.

Michael knew she was right, a year wasn’t long in a life time and he had no problem locking down his emotions and thoughts. He knew how to do this it very well, it was something he naturally knew, after all his Ma had taught him well, it was something he craved to do.
Michael knew he was not one to pry in someone’s life but he didn’t like anyone poking away at his emotions, so the vault came in handy on a daily basis.

Cheyenne continued, “Listen to your Ma …carefully … my son and remember… not just at university but in life, I have taught you this since you were a baby…, emotions cloud our judgement…. that vault comes in handy to focus on the goals ahead…. No matter what they are, you understand?”

Michael agreed… he felt a huge weight had lifted off his chest. His Ma was truly the only person that could knock some sense into him, and he knew she was most confident doing this.

“Son before I leave this phone call.. I want you to promise your Ma you will be careful and look after yourself…” she continued
“Speak to Mother Nature,….. listen to your heart, …….learn and digest everything…”
“….. but Mikie.. remember this… not everyone is your friend… not everyone is your enemy… you must however look deep into your own soul, you’re inner core, the place that only the beautiful universe has the power to create….and use that to guide you……..”
“You will do just fine”, she added not to scare him into answers she knew she couldn’t give him over the phone.
Cheyenne knew things but also knew Michael was not ready for those pressures and not being able to tell him face to face, she knew she had to wait for him to come home. She knew now was not the time, until he returned, she just wanted him to grow up into the man she knew he would be. She knew university was the best place to crawl out of ones shell and explore. She knew he would stay safe and come home, she felt it deep within her own core.

Michael didn’t question his Ma and he knew she was truly the only person who knew him better than anyone, after all everyone called him the mama’s boy, he wasn’t the mamas boy in his own mind but he knew he had his mothers strength, her courage and her way of thinking. He always was at peace and home with her, always heard her whispers that comforted him when he felt out of sorts.
Since he was a child she always protected him, although she treated them all equally, she always made extra time for him and did slightly encourage him more. He knew this deep down inside.

“I love you Mikie…. more than life itself,…. more than the air I breath”, she swallowed hard as she whispered to him
“… now go study, make your Ma proud and stay strong”
Cheyenne knew a war is brewing and didn’t need to burden Michael just yet. She knew he had to complete university, as heavy as her heart was and a mother’s love she knew this would not to be an easy journey for Michael, but also knew he would come back a man. This was a journey to prepare him for what was yet to come.
She cried for the first time in a long time of the pain and guilt that burdened her own soul.

“I love you too Ma!”
Michael felt relieved he had heard her voice; yet hollow as he missed her embrace. She had a touch he never felt in any human before, she was truly the only one to ever hug him, hold him and encourage him.
He did have a strong instinct to feel the warmth of a persons soul, he knew this came from his Ma, she had that warmth in her own soul, the place that a bright light would wrap itself up around you when you embraced her, he knew it was the blanket of safety and he missed her blanket, he knew he would feel it once again.
A year was not long at all. He was not one to let his Ma down.
