I like simple squared houses as well. I do build them or I renovate the ones which come with the game to a more interesting interior layout. I don't care too much for houses with 2,3, or 4 levels to them (unless an apartment building). Nor do I like large lots (30x30 is big enough for me).
I take a lot of screenshots, so I do love rooms with filler clutter added as accents. Dish soap & sponge on the kitchen sink. Files and letters on the office desk. However, I'd rather my Sims environment be filled with items they can interact with beyond 'view'.
