I have them invest in businesses, but also buy better appliances, plumbing fixtures, and furniture, especially beds. When they can afford it, I move them to bigger houses. Sometimes my households move several times in their lifetime. I'm currently playing an acrobat living in an apartment in Bridgeport. I get a bit tired of my sims having to use elevators to go into and out of their homes, so I'm considering having her move to an apartment with stairs instead, one I've already made or will make for her, before she moves to the expensive two story, 3 bedroom house I made some time ago specifically for small lots. I'll have to bulldoze one of the starter houses to place it for her. But she has a great view where she lives now, overlooking the butterfly esplanade and the ocean, so I'm kind of reluctant to move her away from there.
