Black Screening

Hi there,

I've recently set up the sims 3 on a new pc but I'm currently running into an issue where the game randomly black screens and also forces itself off of full screen and becomes windowed. I haven't found any way to recover it when this happens so I lose my progress. Apart from this the game seems to run perfectly. For context I did have a problem similar to this before except it seemed to just back screen when I was using edit town as my fps would go into the hundreds! After this I managed to cap my fps to 60 and I've been able to use edit town with no issues. I also run the game at almost max settings.

I've matched my graphics card, limited FPS, installed NRAAS errortrap & overwatch, and I've gotten the smooth patch. I think my specs should far exceed the game's requirements but still having issues. I've also downloaded some other mods including more NRAAS, randomsimfixes and nectar glass replacement by Icarus.

I have no idea what could be causing this now that my fps has been fixed. I've posted my deviceconfig below in case that helps. I'd greatly appreciate some steps or advice on what to do next!

  • Sunset_Gossip  Please list all the mods you've installed in case there's something else that might be an issue.  NRaas mods are fine, but a full list is better.

Please also list the graphics settings you're using in-game.  A screenshot of that page would be enough.

Finally, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

The NRAAS mods that I have are master controller, errortrap, overwatch, cupcake, mover, porter, register, retuner, story progression + relationships addon and traveler. I've got two Lazy Duchess which are the smooth patch 2.1, and randomsimfixes. Lastly I've got nectar glass replacement by Icarus_allsorts.

  • Sunset_Gossip  Iactually wanted a screenshot of the in-game graphics settings.  I can see most of the settings here, but not the resolution the game is using.  It might be worth turning high-detail lots down to 2, but there's something more pressing: your graphics driver is crashing.  This could explain the black screens if the crashes are happening while you play.  So please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the driver, exactly as described here:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

You can get a fresh copy of the newest AMD driver here:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/graphics/radeon-rx/radeon-rx-7000-series/amd-radeon-rx-7800-xt.html

If this alone doesn't help, try playing in windowed mode.  Even if you'd rather not play like that in general, it's a useful test.  If you get yet another black screen, look for new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Click Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for an error that happened at exactly the time of the most recent black screen, specifically after you reinstalled the graphics driver and switched to windowed mode.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.
