try have your sim bake the goodies on the home lot drag and drop them to the inventory then just go to the bakery then drag and drop to the goodies into the display case not from the front through the glass try the back of the display case the open space ( don't bake a lot of goodies though just two different ones to see if it works for you no point in baking loads of things just in case it doesn't work for you ) and click on the register to set the sale prices and or the display case too either one should work for that
I had a similar issue. I tried going into "Town Edit" Mode and place the premade bakery that comes with the set. I made some pie at the bakery but my sim would walk over and place the item on the counter then i couldnt pick it up, put it in my inventory or even move the item. Later after several tries i tried making a home bakery. This didn't work out because no one would come unless I called them via smart phone to come over and it was just annoying having people walk around my house then i would have to ask everyone to leave. I hope they figure these issues out : /

@lilblister can't have a bakery on a home lot as it's not a business/retail lot
you need to own the venue to place items in the displays and the lot type is set to hang out and yes other sims will help themselves to stuff ( especially once any lot is set to hang out ) but they do buy the baked goodies
I found if i'm on the bakery lot I own you/I do need to go to buy mode to place the goodies into the display case
if I bake at the home lot with the bakers oven then once the sims puts the plate down I can drag and drop to the personal inventory I then just move the camera to the bakery and can drag and drop from the personal inventory there are some thread going on about the bakery over at the sims 3 on how best to restock I have no idea which thread would be best to link here for you to look at but they are/should be easy enough to find
