EA App won't download Sims 3 + Expnasions

EA App won't download the Sims 3 + Expansions.

First it will download the Sims 3 base game, but when I go to launch it, it will give an error and will be like "there was an error" and only allowing me to click OK. It says version 0.0.0.0 in the launcher.

All expansions / DLC fail to download. I get an error installing issue. (Probably because the base game fails to install/download correctly).

I have tried the Sims 3 version on Steam and I have no issue downloading/running it. (Problem is I have some packs on EA App and not Steam, such as Sweet Treats)

-----

I have tried:

1. Installing Patch 1.67 (but using an installer it will say your EA version is patched despite the launcher giving no version number)

2. Don't suggest the "Alder Patch" as I have no issue running Sims 3 on Steam, it's an EA App issue.

3. Tried changing program location to a different program file (x86) for expansions only, for base game, etc. A combination of variants.

4. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling the EA app

5. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling Sims 3

6. Tried installing Sims 3 and moving my Steam version over to the EA version (where it would be installed)

7. Contacting EA help but they just say "it's an issue on our end, we're aware of the fix" (and googling has shown its been an issue since October last year)

8. I tried installing only the base game + running it via EA app = error and it will open the launcher but be version 0.0.0.0 and say there was an error and crash

-----

Is there any actual solution (and I shouldn't need to download a third party app to fix a download from a company's launcher. Steam doesn't have this issue nor do my Steam Sims 3 version. It's just the EA Sims 3 version, so clearly it's not a PC problem or I can't run the Sims 3 as Steam has no problem running/downloading it).

  • @Tigryonak  I'm sorry to say, I'm starting to run out of ideas too.  One thing to check, though, is whether the registry entries for the Steam version of Sims 3 have all been removed.  They'd be in two locations:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Electronic Arts\Sims(Steam)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Sims(Steam)

Since you're not currently using the Steam version, the entire Sims(Steam) sections can and should be deleted.  If you're not comfortable editing the registry yourself, a tool like Piriform's CCleaner can help; the free version is fine here too.  But please make sure these are all you're removing.

Speaking of the registry, I'd like to know what entries yours has for Sims 3 that are not from the Steam version.  If they're not being created properly, that would explain the problem.  Please list yours, and I can compare them to those from my EA App-based install and see what, if anything, is missing.

  • I also tried the commonly:

If that doesn't help, please uninstall both Sims 3 and the EA App with Revo Uninstaller (the free version is fine), and restart your computer before reinstalling. Create a new folder into which you'll install Sims 3. The folder should be on the root level of the drive of your choice, for example C:\Games is fine, but not C:\Program Files\Games.

If you use a third-party antivirus, please disable it, temporarily of course, before installing Sims 3, and don't reenable it until you've tested the game once. As long as you don't do anything else at the same time, your computer should be safe.

    Also did not work.

@Tigryonak  Please post a screenshot of the error you get when you try to install an expansion.

Please also let me know whether, after uninstalling Sims 3 and the EA App with Revo and reinstalling the game into a new folder, you still see the version 0 in the launcher.  This problem is typically cleared up by a fresh install with the antivirus disabled, so I'm surprised it didn't work for you.

For good measure, I'd like to see a dxdiag as well.  If your computer has more than one drive, let me know on which one you've been installing Sims 3.

Error I get after installing just the base game and trying to play it.

  •  The expansions seem to download/work fine from trying to install it now after doing the Revo thing. (I say it seems to because I only downloaded Katy Perry's Sweet Treats to test because it was a couple MBs, so it was an easy/fast test). However, the base game refuses to load as you can see from the launcher issue.

  • DxDiag report.

And with the Sims 3 Steam, I use the Alder patch to run it (otherwise it wouldn't start but afterwards = good to go/play) but trying to run it on the EA version = still version 0.0.0.0/launcher error.

@Tigryonak  If you install the base game and don't run the Alder Lake patch, do you get the same error and version number?  I understand you need some intervention in order to play, but it would be interesting to know whether the patch is triggering the error.  Some antivirus software has flagged the patch as dangerous, and it does alter the executable, so it's a possibility.

As for why the problem would only affect the EA App install, one explanation is that the two use different executables.  Another is that the antivirus "knows" enough about Steam to ignore anything installed inside its program files but doesn't grant the same leeway to EA games.  This is just speculation though.

I don't see anything in your dxdiag that explains this issue, although that's not a surprise.  Off-topic, I do see that Resident Evil 5 is crashing and also trying to run on the iGPU, in case you're troubleshooting that problem as well.  You can tell your system to use the Nvidia GPU for RE5 under Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings > Browse > re5dx9.exe.

Same error and version number whether I use the Alder Lake patch or not (aka it won't run at all with trying either method).

For anti-virus, I'm not running any (other than Microsoft Windows Defender and the likes, but it would pop up with a warning/refuse to launch if it were preventing it from working). It could be that Steam/the EA version use two different executables but it seems like its on EA's end (which is why the EA version isn't working, as it looks like it doesn't install or something correctly)

For Resident Evil 5, the crashing was me testing mods and an ENB haha. I was testing to see if it would work/run with those enabled, and that caused the crash (otherwise it was launching/running fine).

As for the Sims 3 with the EA app, I can't think of anything other solutions. I've tried almost everything I can think off, and EA support has been of little use in actually solving the issue at hand.

This worked, super annoying though that I had to delete every registry related to the Sims 3.
