How can I build a basement in a pre-existing house that has foundation?

Please someone help, when I moved my sims in I just have renovated the house and made it bigger and better. I want to add a basement but I can not get stairs to work... I know from google searching t...

I think how I did it was I deleted the foundation and then re foundated around it? I know I've done it I'm just not sure how.
