How to Move Towns?

Hello

I will be moving my sim household to a new town (world) soon. Why is through the library-bin bad? What about when the game gives a blue pop-up in the middle of the screen saying 'there are new towns .... would you like to move there now?'? What about on their computer?

Thanks :)

  • DivinylsFan  Saving the household to the library and placing it in a new save is perfectly fine.  What is bad is not quitting to desktop before loading the new save.  If you only exit to the Main Menu, some of the data from the old save can remain in memory and be superimposed on the new save, corrupting it before you've even started.

This is also why using the do you want to move to a new town pop-up is discouraged, and the same goes for using the phone or computer to move to a new town.  You're doing the same thing, loading a new world without closing the game, and thereby running the risk of corrupting the new save.

And to be clear, the old world doesn't need to be corrupt for its data to corrupt the new save.  The simple fact that it's a different world (or at least a progressed copy of the same world) means there will be mismatches in pointers and other details that are impossible for the player to see but that the game depends on in the background.

Point is, save your household to the bin, quit the game, load the new save, and place the household there.  If you want to preserve their house, save it separately, which you can do by evicting the household first.

    What kind of pointers?

Why is the in-game option in the game, when did that feature come out, was it early in the release, if so, then did they address it in a patch?

So when I thought I heard not to go via library, I had heard TO?

Aw, I thought it was going to be kinda neat, saying goodbye to everyone, using the computer or phone, hopping in a van, meat-truck, and arriving in the new one.

What if all of their actual memories are cleaned out of their scrapbooks first? Are you saying they'd have a memory about the old world by going the in-game way? With the old friends in their relationship panel, or would they be gone? And their family inventory would be intact right? And any photos and paintings in there or their inventory?

How many worlds would be the limit of hopping, for either method?

  • DivinylsFan  I meant a pointer in the computer sense, as a technical term.

The in-game move to new town feature was introduced with the Island Paradise patch, and a lot of features from that time never got fixed.

I don't know who told you not to go through the library, but they're misinformed.

If you want to see what would and would not be preserved when saving a household to the library, try it yourself.  I'm only about 95% sure what does and doesn't get saved.

There's no limit to the number of times you can save your sims to the library and place them in a new save.  There isn't a theoretical limit for the in-game way either, but in practice, things would likely break down before too long for the reasons I listed previously.

If you want to preserve memories and relationships and everything else from the old town, use NRaas Traveler's Change Hometown feature instead.  It's described here:
