Re: Change Sims 3 Save Location Away From C: Drive
The save files location is hard coded to save in the user directory in the documents folder which is on the system drive. It is easier to reinstall the game using the custom install to install to a different storage device. This will place the proper entries into the registry and the game should work as normal. You could use a symbol link to move directories (or files) to another location but this could make trouble shooting harder because the actual directory (file) is not where the program thinks it should be but the operating system knows where it is (or should). I do not recommend moving the whole user/documents directory as loosing that could make (probably) Windows unstable (like in won't work anymore). Where the game saves is not a registry entry but rather hard coded so you have to "fool" the operating system. I have posted several (many) that I don't recommend a small ssd for the system drive for the casual user for this very issue. Using your computer in this manner requires more then novice knowledge of the operating system (Windows) because Windows will eat up a small ssd drive. TS3 can be installed to an alternate location but once you start doing this you will loose the benefit of the speed a ssd provides. I don't recommend anything less then 500gb for Windows operating system and with 1tb hard drives selling for $59.99 and a 512gb ssd selling for $339.99 makes the bump in price a hard sell. Most people buy computers by their pocket book. With a $250 price increase puts ssd's in the nice to have hobbyist catagory. Another debate is the reliability of ssds. Ssds have not been manufactured long enough to prove their reliablity. I still get old computers with Seagate ST 225s that work (vintage 1984). When someone hands me a 30 year old ssd drive that is still working I'll gladly become a believer but until then.
