Re: How to add mods to the Sims 3? Macbook 64 bit

@laylan2302  Please uninstall Sims 3 and reinstall it somewhere else.  Applications is fine, Applications/EA Games is fine, a new folder is fine.  But having it in Documents is going to cause trouble sooner or later, probably sooner.  Delete the Mods folder you've created as well.

Once you've done that, start the game once, and you should see a Sims 3 user folder, with the typical user files, in Documents > Electronic Arts.  This is what it should look contain (Windows guide, but the files are the same):

https://sims3.crinrict.com/en/2011/01/faq-user-files.html

You'll need to create your own Mods folder, or you can download the Mods Framework from here:

https://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Installing_Sims_3_Package_Files/Setup_and_Files

It comes with two sample mods so you can see whether the folder is working before adding anything else.

Let me know if the mods don't work, or you still can't find the Sims 3 user folder after you've started the game once.

Hello, thank you for helping me.

I uninstalled TS3 and reinstalled it in Applications/EA Games/The Sims 3. However, it still did not work for me. I still can't find the Sims 3 user folder after I've started the game once. I also saved the game before quitting but when I restart the device, my saved lot just disappear.

The folder of the game just look so empty to me. It does not have all the files that TS3 should have.

@laylan2302  The Sims 3 user folder, the one that contains your saves and other user data, is always in Documents > Electronic Arts, regardless of where you've installed the game.  That's why it was important to uninstall Sims 3 itself and install it elsewhere—having these two sets of files in the same location is asking for trouble.

If you've tried to save your progress after uninstalling and reinstalling, and your save/sims/lot disappeared, that might be due to your iCloud Drive settings.  Please see the first post of this thread, which was written for Sims 4 but is equally relevant to Sims 3:

If you still can't find your user folder, please open Terminal (in Applications > Utilities) and enter this command:

    find / -name "Version.tag" 2>/dev/null

    Then post the result here.

@puzzlezaddict I entered the game again and took a screenshot of my Sims to see where it was going to save my screenshots. It turns out that I do have a "Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3" folder where all the necessary files are. But it is inside a hidden folder called "var," and I tried to move the folder out of the hidden files and put it in Documents, but it's not working.

    What should I do?

@laylan2302  That's not the right folder; it's a hidden set of reference that isn't supposed to be touched.

Please run the Terminal command I provided, and post the result.

    @puzzlezaddict This is the result:

    find / -name "Version.tag" 2>/dev/null

    /private/var/folders/g1/hyky00qn6qq2k4ksq9dkwqgw0000gn/T/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Version.tag

    nguyenbinhphuonglam@Air-cua-Nguyen ~ %

    nguyenbinhphuonglam@Air-cua-Nguyen ~ % find / -name "Version.tag" 2>/dev/null

    /System/Volumes/Data/private/var/folders/g1/hyky00qn6qq2k4ksq9dkwqgw0000gn/T/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Version.tag

@laylan2302  Right, so the folder isn't anywhere accessible to the game.  (As noted, the location shown is a private area not meant to be accessed, and Sims 3 certainly can't find it.)  If you've started the game once, and the Sims 3 folder doesn't exist here:

Macintosh HD > Users > your username > Documents > Electronic Arts

then this may be an iCloud Drive issue.  Please read the first post of the master thread I linked earlier for how to disable iCloud Drive for Deskto & Documents.

If that doesn't help, please create a new admin account on your Mac.  Don't tie it to your Apple ID—you can skip that step—just sign in and launch Sims 3, then look for the user folder in the location above, of course with the new account's username.
