Yes you should still be able to play the same game when adding seasons. In general you should always make a copy of your saved game just in case anything goes wrong. This way you have extra copies. You can also save your family to your library by going to edit town and click on the family to save to library. Just exit out of the game after you do so it does not change your game or actually save your game after you save the family to library. You will then have an extra copy of the family you are playing and will be stored where premade households are located.
