I have a few options for you and i'm not 100 percent sure they might work but...
1) make sure your system is charged or plugged if its chargable. Mine used to quit to tell me my battery was low.
2) if you havent ever restarted your system since getting the sims then try restarting the computer to make sure its good.
3) maybe try uninstalling custom content or mods if you installed any. You may not have, but if you did, uninstall them and see if it works.
4) this almost definetly wont work, but uninstalling and then reinstalling sims.
5) it might just be a glitch. I'm sure there is a section on thesims3.com or some EA website with Q and A, so ask EA about it and they will probably answer.
6) finally, maybe your system is too old or too unadvanced for it. Check how much storage you have, the release date, and maybe your updated version of the Sims 3 isn't compatible with your computer.
