Did you replace firstname lastname with the name of your sim ?

Use testingcheatsenabled true hold shift click anywhere out of the basement and select teleport me here. Then remove your staircase and then use a different one. Make sure there is no light or anything obstructing your staircase at the top or bottom. It does look funny watching them walk up and down.
