I've done everything you've suggested and I'm still having graphical issues. I also forgot to mention, my screen flashes green lines from time to time (ONLY WHILE IM PLAYING THE SIMS 3). The save that won't open is in BridgePort and it does have a pet kitten.
@ayyysims3 A number of players have had trouble playing with pets, or even the Pets EP, with hardware similar to yours. I'm not sure why, and your graphics settings are generally where they should be. You can try lowering the sim detail setting, again at the Main Menu (quit to desktop and reload afterwards), but I'm not sure that would help.
For the save that won't load, try using a backup instead. Even if you never made one, the game keeps the data from the second to last time you saved. Open Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Saves, and you'll see a folder for each save plus another folder with the same name and a .backup extension. So if your save is called Bridgeport, you'll have a Bridgeport.sims3 folder and a Bridgeport.sims3.backup folder. Change the name of the folder and delete the .backup extension (e.g. Bridgeport1.sims3), and it'll be available to load from the Main Menu.
The green lines don't sound good: there could be an issue with your graphics chip or with its driver. If the problem is the driver, hopefully Apple will release a more stable version with its next OS update, but there's nothing you can do in the interim. Please make sure though that your laptop can properly cool itself while you play: elevate it so that air can flow underneath, or use a cooling pad or fan.
If you see other similar graphics glitches, please post more screenshots. I've forwarded the ones in this thread to EA people, but more documentation is better. I don't know whether anything will come of it, but we can always hope.

Thank you for all your help, this issue is mostly with Apple. I'll update this thread if anything changes.
