Sims 3 freezing on Mac

I've recently bought a new Imac (released late last year) and I've been looking forward to playing my Sims 3 games on it (I've historically only ever played the Sims on a PC). I've loaded the game quite a few times now and each time it freezes a few minutes into the game - CAS seems to be a big problem, especially when the mouse goes over store content. The most recent time I tried to play the game the game stopped completely and I received this error message "Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x00000000 at address 0x7c471701. Do you wish to debug it?"

After looking in the forums it looks as if Sims 3 games are hardly compatible with Mac at all and there are all sorts of issues, I couldnt find any solutions! Can anyone help? I don't think I'll need to reinstall as this was a fresh installation today!

  • There is no solution, but here's some advice:

If you actually want to "play" the game as it's supposed to work, then get a PC or Bootcamp & Windows for your Mac. The game is not natively written for our systems (I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro). As long as EA uses Cider, a "wrapper" for the game that enables Macs to play Windows games, it's going to crash with memory issues.

Do not follow EA game advisors' advice without taking into account that many times their advice is wrong for Mac users and can harm our systems. If EA's customer support tells you to open Activity Monitor and quit processes - DO NOT DO IT. Your Mac will freeze resulting in you needing to power it off using the Power button which can be harmful. This is the first "solution" they tell all Mac users to do. Just use common sense when it comes to their "advice."

Here are two good posts from the Sims 3 Mac forum that have a couple of useful "band-aids" to get the game to work temporarily:

Best of luck in your battle to play the Sims 3.

  • Thanks gaa17 that's really helpful - I just can't believe EA sell a product for MAC users when it isn't made to work on our system!

On my new iMac doesn't work too, try all the  possibilities and advices, spent money on all the games and will probably suit them for misleading everybody that is suitable for Macs. The game is doing all possible problem without working correctly.

I might have a solution, it works for me (I'm on a mac)

So I just load it up and once its loading I click Shift and Enter

So then go to Finder > Documents > Electronic Arts > Sims 3

and in there should be Cache.files delete all of them make sure they have Cache at the end of them (not the folders) only the pages

Then if it still won't go check again and delete more of the Caches, they can regenerate in the folder

So then it will load it can take time so be patient

You will have to do this all the time you load the game or else it wont work, hope this helped sorry if it didn't :/

  • I have a problem similar to this. My game loads quick, and the gameplay is very smooth and quick. When I go into CAS to begin creating a household, it continues to be quick with no lag, and then all of the sudden my game freezes. I attempt to move my mouse and the mouse turns into the regular mouse for mac instead of the cartoon sims 3 mouse. After it turns into the mac mouse, I can't move my mouse at all. My game is completely frozen. I can't even open force quit with cmd + opt + esc. I do notice that when my game freezes, my mac has become very hot, maybe overheating.  By this point I have to shut down my computer with the power button on my keyboard, which I understand could be very harmful to my mac. Im wondering what if the freezing problem has anything to do with heat/overheating, and if so, what can I

    do about it?
