I had this problem as well, I reloaded an old save multiple times and tested several different variables when it became graduation time. I played through approximately 15 different senarios and what I found was that 100% of the time if I invited anyone from my sim's home-world to come see her graduation ceremony, I would experience the above mentioned glitch when I tried to take my sim back for another term. Of course this may not be true for everyone, but simply not inviting anyone, ever, to graduation is working for me right now. Good luck!

I, too, kinda suspects this to be related to the graduation ceremony not going so well. Keeping a backup save just after the final exams might be wise. However, some people had brand new sims disappear as well ...

Eeek...I tend to create a lot of new sims when new expansions come out, so I'll keep my post updated if I come across anything new or different. The way I see it, I've come here plenty of times in the past needing help, so if I can help even one person my effort is worth it. I agree with keeping a backup. I've found it very useful to keep a fresh backup of my homeworld just prior to leaving for university and just after finals.
