So this is the first time I ever had this issue. It is the 4th disappointing bug I've had today, and I've only been playing a little while.
It is definitely not resolved even with a workaround.
I'm not sure what's up but this is the worst the game's been for me as far as bugs.
I'm having this issue as well. The wedding ceremony was buggy too - I could only initiate it from the arch (in San Myshuno Meadows) with the groom. When the bride tried the option was greyed out with "Marrying a Sim in your employ would be inappropriate. Dismiss them from their role to further pursue a relationship." because she's in other relationships as a serial romantic. Weird bug, but okay.
Now neither one of them can take a piece because it says I have to wait for the newlyweds to take the first slice and there's no option to cut the cake. It doesn't matter if the groom or bride adds the topper, accesses the cake, where I put it, etc. Ugh.
