I believe I noticed this glitch around the beginning of this year, I'm not sure if it was before or after the EA app was released. I've looked for solutions but all the threads about this bug are very old or outdated. I've tried many different things and I'm out of options.
In my current save, I had my sim work all the way to level 8 of guitar skill so they could begin writing music and publishing it. Once my sim reached this level, she would begin writing the song as normal. If I had her stop to do a different activity, the song would save normally into her inventory. However, when she would come back to resume her song writing, the progress bar on the activity in the lower left corner had completely started over, making it near impossible to ever finish a song.
I've looked into this bug a lot and noticed it only occurs when a loading screen happens in the game. For example, if I enter CAS, manage worlds, save and exit to main menu, or save and exit the entire game, her song writing progress will instantly be reset. However, if my sims stops writing and for example uses the bathroom and eats a meal, when I click to have her resume the song writing, the progress will be saved and pick back off from where she left off.
I began having another sim in the household, a teenage boy, write a book to see if his progress would save or be reset after a loading screen just as it had happened in the song writing process. Sadly, the same bug happened with a completely different sim doing a completely different activity with saved progress involved.
I thought that maybe this save may had been corrupted. I recovered the save and to my surprise the bug seemed to be gone. I could enter into a loading screen and the progress of writing a book or song would be saved. However, I later realized that once I exited the game and came back the next day to play again, the bug had returned.
I decided to create an entirely new household and save, but the bug was still occurring in this one and any other saved I would open. Out of options, I started to try to figure out any other way to fix this and have my game return to normal. I deleted the EA app and redownloaded it, no luck.
I copied my sims 4 folder onto my desktop as a backup and deleted the sims 4 folder from my electronic arts folder. I then restarted my computer and when it turned on I immediately opened the sims as if it was brand new. I created a new household, put in the cheat to raise they're skill to level 8 of guitar. After having them begin writing a book or song and seeing a noticeable change in progress, I had the sim stop doing the activity and entered into a loading screen. When I returned back into the home, I clicked on the song sheet in the inventory and clicked resume, but the progress had started all over again. The same thing happened with writing a book.
Finally, I decided to uninstall the sims 4 from the EA app and reinstall. After hours of waiting, I opened my game nervously hoping the bug would finally be fixed and I could return to normal gameplay. I did the exact same steps as before, but the bug still occurred.
Both of the sims 4 folders were brand new on the last two attempts. No custom content, no saves, no screenshots. It had been as if I just installed the sims 4 for the very first time, leading me to believe in was something wrong with my actual sims 4 game.
This bug if very frustrating as it alters a lot of activities and situations I wanted for the lives of my sims in this save. I have tried everything I can possibly think of to solve this issue, but it is no use. I'm on Windows and my sister uses Mac meaning she still has the origin app and this bug does not occur for her at all. If anyone has any solutions of anything I haven't tried, please help! At this point I really don't think there is a solution and I may just have to work my way around it in gameplay.
My workaround still works for me, though others say it doesn't: when the progress circle seems to be stuck, I right-click the computer or instrument while the Sim is writing/programming/composing and Reset Object. This will say that the book/programme/composition is completed. BTW just in case you don't know, you need "testingcheats on" to Reset Object.
My problem was already present when it was still in Origin, so I don't think it's that... =(
