[COLLECTION THREAD] Polish

Due to some weird region locking policy, I'm forced to play Sims 4 in Polish. I've heard the price argument already, but the base game is not much cheaper here and the SPs are actually more expensive than in US – plus I could play Sims 3 in English (purchased via Origin). I've also heard legends about some all-regions disk version – but I play on a Mac.

The translation always irked me (it's just bad), but recently I've noticed some errors that make the game really confusing. (I'm sorry if my English descriptions are not the same as the in game ones.)

1. Non-fiction books translated as "Beletrystyka", which really means "Prose" or simply "Fiction". (Mystery books are translated as "Sensacja" – it should be rather "Powieść detektywistyczna", but the mistake is not that jarring)

2. I always though the option "Załóż serwis społecznościowy" (meaning "Create a social network") meant my sims were supposed to be the next Mark Zuckerbergs, so I never used it. Turns out it should be translated as e.g. "Załóż konto w serwisie społecznościowym" ("Create a social media profile"). Also "Aktualizuj konto społecznościowe" – "Update a profile", not "Update a social network".

3. Why the weird regionalism for the word "slippers"? It should be "kapcie" in standard Polish. The word that is used in game, "pantofle", means "women's shoes" in standard Polish (and is used to describe slippers only in one city, Kraków, population 700K ).

4. Not confusing, but really annoying – Polish translation of "resume (painting etc.)" is "Kontynuuj wytwarzanie" – which in English means "continue manufacturing". Even "Kontynuuj tworzenie" ("Continue creating") would be better, but not ideal.

These are just a few things that annoy me the most after over six months of playing. Is it because the base game is slightly cheaper here EA feels they can skimp on good localization? I wonder how many kids learned the word "beletrystyka" playing Sims 4 and think it means non-fiction :/.

EDIT: I added some screenshots – unfortunately it allows me to attach only three per post. Ad 2, I misremembered – in the Polish version there are actually two phrases used for "social network" (both with missing word for profile or account). The better one is used only for the "Close" option – "serwis społecznościowy". The second one, used for "Open" and "Update" option, "serwis sieciowy" means "online service".

EDIT (crin): Added pics

  • Hello. I want to report another translation problem in polish version of game. In "family collections" there is MySims Trophy named Yuki. In description there is sentence "Yuki lub gryźć twarze" (Yuki or bite faces) and I think it should be "Yuki lubi gryźć twarze" (Yuki likes to bite faces). If I'm wrong just tell me. Regards, Deia

  • Since the thread was moved to Bug Reports, I'll add a few more mistranslations from CAS:

    - Squeamish trait translated as "Wrażliwy". "Wrażliwy" means someone sensitive, vulnerable, emphatic first. It should be rather "delikatny" or maybe "przeczulony".

    - Self-assured translated as "Zadufany". I'm not sure of original connotations, but in Polish "zadufany" is a negative trait. I think "self-assured" is a positive one? In that case is should be just "pewny siebie". Synonyms that don't have negative connotations are "śmiały" (also meaning "bold" in English) or "asertywny" ("assertive").

    - One of the categories in tops (not sure of the original name, the one with a sleeveless shirt symbol) is translated as "bezrękawniki". "Bezrękawnik" in Polish means a vest, but only as outerwear (e.g. a puffa vest). It should be rather "na ramiączkach".

Honestly, after years of playing Sims 3 in English, it's a pain having to play Sims 4 in Polish. I gave only those few examples, because I just try not to read the text too closely. I have to Google for English equivalents anyway to communicate with other simmers.

EDIT: Screenshots added. I also noticed a text error while taking a screenshot for Zadufany (Self-Assured) – all of the traits are in feminine form (it's for a female sim – hence "Zadufana", not "zadufany") except for "Porywczy" (which is a masculine form of "Hot-Headed" – should be "Porywcza")
