I am having the same problem with writing a sketch on the computer (didn't try writing a book but might be the same bug). I have tried as icestromj said to put the computer in the house inventory and put it back on the desk and it worked! But if we have to do this everytime the Sim leaves the house it will be kinda annoying... Thank you though for the solution icestromj cause I was blocked since my Sim has to write sketches (he wants to be a comedian)!!

Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Get sim to write on computer
What happens when the bug occurs? If the Sim is already doing an action, the action of writing goes in the list of action but disapears when it comes to doing it, and if the Sim is doing nothing, nothing happens when clicking on "write..."
What do you expect to see? Sim writing a sketch
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? No
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? I've moved the location of the game and my saves on the computer, but I don't think it is related to that since I'm not the only one
Also the same thing happens on my fridge when I want to cook (not with all of them but with several dishes)
