Game crashing when adopting animals

Game crashing every time you try and adopt and animal

I have tried to adopt a cat 4 times and each time when the NPC Sim goes to show you your potential adoptee the game crashes. Corrupted my whole save file and I can't open my family at all now. No matter what save I try and recover it opens my last save (even though I deleted it), and the game crashes again immediately. My whole family is corrupted now
